"Two things define you: How patient you are when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything." Nobody seems to know who said this.
"He that can have patience can have what he will."
"I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature."
Suffice to say, I've been thinking about patience. I've been described as both patient and impatient, but the times when it was the latter were typically when I wasn't on board with whatever was happening at the time. Which is a quality better described as stubborn than impatient. I think sometimes stubbornness and patience go together. I mean you have to feel principled about something in order to be patient towards it. There's no sense in being patient in something you don't feel strongly about. There's also no sense in not being patient when you do feel strongly about something. That is to say, there's no use giving up on something that you still feel strongly about because the time will keep passing whether or not you do it or don't do it.
And all the critics in the world won't make a difference when you've worked hard enough to feel good about yourself. I know that much for sure. All in a lifetime. That's something my grandmother says when things don't really make sense. I like to say it too. You can apply it to anything from broken hearts to graduations to old age to who knows what else. They all seems so insurmountable when you're there, but once you're passed it, they're just part of your life. They're all just part of a bigger story for you to look back on. So, it's best to be patient through the things that excite you and motivate you and also be patient through the things that agitate you, because soon enough you'll move on to another phase, another chapter, and you'll wonder why you spent so much of your time worried.
All in a lifetime.
