I'm surprised I've gone an entire summer without posting a smoothie recipe. My life, as usual, is fluctuating, and I have the privilege of being able to accommodate that. Running down south for fair trade fashions shows, and making a living what feels like a completely different world up north, and making time for myself, and deciding what course to take next, and plans in their air, and plans on the ground. It can start to feel like everything is just everywhere, and it is, all the time. That's my life, and I recently had a conversation with an equally distractible and whimsical friend about this very thing, being more comfortable in flux.
I think there's something to be said for this personality type, the movers and the shakers, the transients, those with flexible attitudes, and after all when things are changing, you'll always be learning something. But recently, I've found value in having a bit of a routine. Doing something consistently and daily, regardless of where I find myself, whether I am running an AirBnb out of Venice, or clacking away behind a computer screen, there are some parts of the day that I can make the same everyday.
To take this a step further, there's a place of center that can be just as easily (not really, but let's try) be accessed when things feel a little too capricious. I've recently learned in my life that some of the things I wanted weren't what I wanted at all. What I actually wanted was to feel the way I thought those things would make me feel. So the solution being, feel that way anyways, as in now. "But how?" you say. Good question, for me the answer has been in my daily routine. Remembering to center, and what I actually want has very little to do with the next milestone I've set for myself and more to do with who I think I'll be when I get there, which I can start meeting up with now, as in this second. If the person I'm thinking I'll show up as is more relaxed and secure, well, there are ways to do this daily without risking the adrenal burnout in the mean time. Because the former requires us to ignore ourselves daily, while in flux (which I've found is always, by the way) and the latter allows for a person to be happy throughout, without becoming dependent on something that may or may not pan out. More importantly the milestones matter less, and the details of daily life matter more. I think they call that staying in the moment. So stay in the moment, make smoothies, meditate, and keep your lofty goals in the picture, just make sure they're not taking up the whole screen.
